The Road to COP27

Positive Impact are Race to Zero Accelerators for the event sector SME supply chain and on the Road to COP27 are enabling action and leadership with the vision that:

At COP27 there will be a 100% increase in the number of event sector SMEs who have joined The Race to Zero (from 160 in November 2021 to 320 in November 2022)

Positive Impact’s global ambassador community, including event graduates will be enabling company, government, association and all engagement activities to meet the goal of halving emissions by 2030 and reaching global (net) zero by 2050.

On 15th June 2022, Race to Zero, an initiative supporting the mandate of UN Climate Change High Level Champions, launched updated criteria and Positive Impact CEO outlined what this means for the future of the global event sector.

During the week of 27th June 2022, the Business Visits and Events Partnership, SME Climate Hub, BEIS, DCMS, The Race to Zero Accelerator Programme, FCDO and Cabinet Office were invited to a meeting September 2022 to explore how the UK government could  announce at COP27:

  1. 100% of the UK Government  event supply chain is being asked to make a net zero carbon commitment. (This is in line with new Race to Zero criteria)

  2. UK government announce they have supported the UK SME event supply chain to join The Race to Zero, in collaboration with SME Climate Hub and Race to Zero Accelerator for Event SMEs Positive Impact and with the support of Business Visits and Events Partnership

On 14th July 2022, Positive Impact delivered a half an hour webinar with Tessa Vincent from The Race to Zero team which explains what updates to The Race to Zero criteria could mean for the global event sector. This webinar was delivered a part of Positive Impact’s conversation series in their role as a Race to Zero accelerator programme.

On 18th September 2022, Positive Impact communicated with the world’s largest event exhibitions via the following letter asking them to support 100% of their event supply chain to make a net zero commitment via Positive Impact Race to Zero Accelerator Programme.

Please use this letter as a template if you would like to communicate with your clients about support their event supply chain to join the race to zero.

On 21st September 2022, the Pivot Point Report was launched alongside the Race to Zero and Race to Resilience Progress Report. These reports are a product of radical collaboration, with 40+ organisations working on accelerating non-state actor climate action in support of the Paris Agreement, coming together to share findings, insights and perspectives.

Positive Impact has contributed as one of 18 Race to Zero Accelerators.

The reports present an overview of the current landscape across the voluntary climate leadership initiatives, and emerging standards and regulations, and offer insights on how to dramatically accelerate from voluntary action to the adequate standards, policies and regulations needed to deliver climate action at scale and achieve the mitigation goal of the Paris Agreement - recognising the different circumstances, capacities and needs of different countries. They explore some appropriate enabling environments and outline the wide array of tools available, and highlight key questions to address hereon, providing a thought-piece for dialogue and consideration.

Most importantly, they actively call - indeed urge - non-state actors to:

(a) join the Race to Zero;
(b) dramatically ratchet their policy engagement in line with this report; and
(c) help inform, shape and drive the needed standards, legislation and regulation to get the world back on track to a 1.5C-aligned pathway to achieve a resilient, just net zero world.

On the 31st October 2022, Positive Impact CEO, Fiona Pelham released a blog to explore whether COP27 will be persuading COP.

On 18th November 2022 we drafted a summary of COP and what this means for the future of the event sector.
